Amazing & Must-Watch New Movies This October on Netflix, Prime Video & More

Must-Watch New Movies This October is the list I wish someone had handed me on 1 October, because this month’s streaming calendar is more packed than anything I’ve seen in a long time.

I’m Khushi Vaid, and I write about movies and OTT here at Just Web Series. Every month, readers send me the same message: “Khushi, there are too many titles, tell me what is actually worth my time.” So, I went through the release calendars of Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar and ZEE5, cross-checked every date, and built the watchlist I’m following myself.

Every one of these must watch new movies. This October was picked on cast, director track record and platform confirmation, not hype alone. Here is what you’ll get in this guide: 12 films, 4 platforms, and 5 release Fridays (2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 October), along with runtimes, cast details and a clear “who should watch this” note for each pick.

One honest disclaimer before we start: several of these titles have not streamed yet, so this is a first-person preview built on trailers, cast, director history and official platform announcements. I’ll add my full verdict to each section once I’ve watched it.

What Are the Must-Watch New Movies This October 2026?

If you only have a minute, here is my short answer. The Must-Watch New Movies This October are Ben Affleck’s kidnapping thriller Animals and the wild satire Sacrifice on Netflix, a heist comedy and a big romantic drama on Prime Video, and two very different Indian films on ZEE5 and JioHotstar. Here is the quick-glance table, with dates as announced on 6 October 2026 (they can shift by country).

Prime Video leads with 7 of the 12 films, Netflix has 3, and ZEE5 and JioHotstar have 1 each. If you are a planner like me, screenshot this table and save it before the month gets busy.

Animals (Netflix, 9 October): The Thriller I’m Starting With

Of all the Must Watch New Movies This October, Animals is the one I have circled first. The premise is simple and nasty: the son of a Los Angeles mayoral candidate is kidnapped, and the family has only a few hours to arrange the ransom.

Ben Affleck directs, co-writes with Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray, and stars, with Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun in the cast.

Three numbers explain my excitement. First, the runtime is just 106 minutes, so I expect very little filler. Second, this is Affleck’s first time in the director’s chair since Air in 2023, a gap of three years. Third, the cinematographer is Robert Elswit, who previously shot The Town with Affleck, so the two already have a working shorthand.

The film is rated R, so expect something tense and adult. I’d recommend it if you enjoy domestic thrillers where a polished public image slowly cracks, in the mould of Gone Girl. I’d skip it if kidnapping plots are a difficult subject for you.

It also arrives in select theatres alongside the Netflix release, according to the platform’s announcement.

Sacrifice (Netflix, 16 October): The Wildest Swing of the Month

Sacrifice is the strangest entry among the Must Watch New Movies This October, and that is exactly why I’m excited. Chris Evans plays Mike Tyler, a fading action star who goes to a billionaire’s gala in Greece and is taken hostage by a group led by Joan, played by Anya Taylor-Joy.

The group believes three famous people must be taken to a volcano to save the Earth. Romain Gavras, who made Athena for Netflix in 2022, directs, and the supporting cast includes Vincent Cassel, Salma Hayek Pinault, John Malkovich, Sam Richardson and Charli XCX.

The film runs 103 minutes and carries an R rating. It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on 6 September 2025, so it has waited more than a year for a wide audience. Netflix has announced 16 October for the US and France. I have not seen a confirmed India date yet, so please check your own Netflix app before you plan your weekend around it.

Will it work? Satire like this tends to divide people, and I expect strong opinions in both directions. For me, a film with that cast and that much ambition is worth 103 minutes even if it only half lands.

New Movies on Netflix October 2026: What Else Is Worth Your Time?

Netflix owns 3 of the 12 Must Watch New Movies This October, and when readers search for new movies on Netflix October 2026, they usually expect big Hollywood names, but my favourite Indian pick is also here.

Ohh My Dog streams from 1 October and stars Pankaj Tripathi in two parallel rescue stories set in different parts of India. It had a theatrical release on 7 August 2026 and was praised for its emotional, animal-welfare-driven storytelling, which makes it a good family option.

If you are a series person, the new movies on Netflix October 2026 list comes with strong company. Below, a creature-feature miniseries starring Josh Hartnett, lands on 8 October.

The Diplomat returns for season 4 on 15 October, and Nobody Wants These returns for season 3 on 22 October. Netflix is also adding library films such as the Bourne collection, though catalogue titles vary by country.

If you enjoy returning shows, my list of 8 blockbuster web series sequels of 2026 covers Netflix, Prime Video and JioHotstar together.

New Movies on Prime Video October 2026: Romance, Heists and Halloween

The new movies on Prime Video October 2026 look very different from Netflix’s lineup. Prime is leaning on genre variety, and 7 of my 12 Must Watch New Movies This October come from it. Here is how I’d approach them:

• Wuthering Heights (2 October): the 2026 take on the classic gothic romance, a good start for the month if you like moody period drama.

• Love of Your Life (14 October): a Prime Original romantic drama that follows one love story across several years and different parts of the world. My pick for a quiet midweek watch.

• Masterplan (16 October): a Prime Original Heist Comedy with Stanley Tucci, Victor Belmondo, Thomas Vincent and Simona Tabasco. Tucci alone is reason enough for me.

• Scream 7 (16 October): the horror franchise arrives on streaming the same day, which makes 16 October a stacked Friday.

• The bride! (23 October): a gothic reimagining that fits the Halloween mood.

• Apocalypse Z: New World (30-31 October): a post-apocalyptic survival sequel timed for Halloween weekend. Platform lists differ between 30 and 31 October, so check your region.

Prime Video also has two series worth mentioning: Carrie from 7 October and The Terminal List season 2 from 21 October. A word of caution: Prime Video’s catalogue is not identical in every country, so a title listed in a US calendar may show up later in India.

Always confirm on the app. You can keep track of everything on our Prime Video page. If you want more Prime Video reading, I have also covered The Revolutionaries review, the Shahid OTT release story and the latest Panchayat 5 release date update.

New OTT Releases October 2026 India: Hindi and Malayalam Picks

The new OTT releases October 2026 India list deserves its own spotlight, because the Must Watch New Movies This October are not only Hollywood, and this is where I find the stories that feel closest to home.

Pooja Meri Jaan (ZEE5, 2 October) is a Hindi crime thriller directed by Navjot Gulati, starring Mrunal Thakur, Huma Qureshi, Vikram Singh Chauhan and Vijay Raaz. It is produced by Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik under Maddock Films, a banner that has built a loyal audience for genre-bending Hindi stories. I’m curious to see Mrunal Thakur in a crime-thriller setting.

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit (JioHotstar, 2 October) is a Malayalam family romance about Ashley, a college student played by Mamitha Baiju, who moves to a new area in Ernakulam. At 2 hours 37 minutes (157 minutes), it is the longest film on my list, so keep a weekend afternoon free. Reviewers describe it as a warm, character-driven entertainer with humour and everyday emotion.

Sardar 2 (Prime Video, 1 October) also streams this month, and Ohh My Dog on Netflix completes my Indian shortlist. For reality-show fans, Bigg Boss season 20 runs on JioHotstar throughout October.

If you follow regional cinema, our JioHotstar page is updated with every new Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam arrival. For more from this platform, read my reports on the Love Story OTT release, the Dhurandhar 2 OTT release date and the Inspector Avinash Season 2 teaser.

Best Movies to Watch on OTT This October: My Picks by Mood

Not sure where to begin? These Must Watch New Movies This October are also the best movies to watch on OTT this October, sorted by what you’re in the mood for:

• Edge-of-the-seat thriller: Animals (Netflix) or Pooja Meri Jaan (ZEE5)

• Something totally different: Sacrifice (Netflix)

• Romance and feelings: Love of Your Life (Prime Video) or Bethlehem Kudumba Unit (JioHotstar)

• Fun group watch: Masterplan (Prime Video)

• Family evening: Ohh My Dog (Netflix)

• Halloween night: Scream 7 or Apocalypse Z: New World (Prime Video)

My rule for choosing the best movies to watch on OTT this October is simple: pick one title that comforts you, one that challenges you, and one you can enjoy with friends. That balance keeps a month of streaming from turning into a pile of unfinished tabs.

My October Watch Plan (With Real Runtime Math)

I like to plan the Must Watch New Movies This October around runtimes. Animals (106 minutes) plus Sacrifice (103 minutes) comes to 209 minutes, or 3 hours 29 minutes, which is less than one long cricket match. Add Bethlehem Kudumba Unit at 157 minutes and the total is 366 minutes, a little over 6 hours for three very different films.

Here is how I’m spreading them out:

• Friday 9 October: Animals after work

• Wednesday 14 October: Love of Your Life, a calm midweek watch

• Friday 16 October: Sacrifice and Masterplan (check Sacrifice availability in India first)

• Saturday 31 October: a Halloween double with Scream 7 and Apocalypse Z: New World

Conclusion

That’s my full guide to the Must Watch New Movies This October on Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar and ZEE5. If I had to pick just three, I’d go with Animals for tension, Sacrifice for sheer boldness and Pooja Meri Jaan for a desi thriller night.
