A small warning: a couple of outlets printed June 6 or June 9, 2029, but most trade reports say June 1, 2029, so I am going with that.  

The Aegon’s Conquest movie release date is about 32 months away from today, so plenty can still change, especially while the Warner Bros. and Paramount merger process is reportedly shaping the studio’s slate. 

Who Is Aegon the Conqueror? 

If you only know the show through Jon Snow and Daenerys, Aegon the Conqueror might feel like a distant legend.  

He is the founder of House Targaryen’s rule in Westeros and the first king to sit on the Iron Throne, which was forged from the swords of his defeated enemies. In lore terms, he lived roughly 280 years before the events of the original series. 

Aegon the Conqueror did not fight alone. His two sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, rode beside him on their own dragons, Vhagar and Meraxes, while Aegon himself rode Balerion the Black Dread.  

Together they conquered six of the seven kingdoms. Dorne was the one that refused to bend, and it stayed independent for around 200 years before joining through marriage and alliances. 

What excites me most about Aegon the Conqueror is that he has never appeared in a live-action Game of Thrones show. Fans have seen his skull-sized legacy, his dragon’s skull in the Red Keep, and his vision of a great winter, but never the man.  

He is also the character who first named the prophecy “A Song of Ice and Fire,” which is the title of Martin’s entire book series. A movie about Aegon the Conqueror is basically the origin story of everything we love about the world. 

Owen Harris: Who Is the Director of the Aegon’s Conquest Movie? 

The big surprise for me was the director. Owen Harris is a British filmmaker best known for television, not blockbusters. Owen Harris directed three episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, including the widely praised Trial of Seven episode, and he has credits on Black Mirror and Brave New World. His only feature film credit so far is the 2015 movie Kill Your Friends. 

I understand why some fans are nervous. Handing a franchise-defining first movie to Owen Harris, a director with one feature on his résumé, feels risky on paper. But I keep coming back to what Owen Harris did in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.  

That series was smaller and more human than the dragon-heavy shows, and Owen Harris proved he can make a tournament duel feel as tense as a battlefield. Warner Bros. clearly trusts Owen Harris with the Game of Thrones tone, and he already understands Westeros from the inside. 

On the writing side, Beau Willimon is the screenwriter. He created House of Cards, earned an Oscar nomination for co-writing The Ides of March, and wrote for Andor. That is a strong résumé for a story about power, ambition and betrayal.  

In my opinion, the pairing of Beau Willimon’s political writing with Owen Harris’s character-first direction is the most promising sign we have seen so far. The project has a creative team that fits the Game of Thrones DNA. 

How Fire & Blood Shapes the Aegon’s Conquest Movie 

Almost everything we know about Aegon the Conqueror’s war comes from Fire & Blood, the 2018 book that tells the history of House Targaryen. Fire & Blood is written like an in-world history, not a novel, which means the events are described by a fictional maester with gaps, contradictions, and rumours.  

That is actually a gift for filmmakers, because it leaves room to dramatise the missing scenes, and Owen Harris will have plenty of room to shape them. 

Aegon’s Conquest is only one section of Fire & Blood, so a single film can realistically cover the landing at Blackwater Bay, the burning of the Field of Fire, and the forging of the Iron Throne without stretching thin.  

If you want to read ahead, Fire & Blood covers roughly the first 150 years of Targaryen rule. Fire & Blood is around 700 pages, so I recommend just the opening chapters if you want to prep without spoilers. 

One thing I appreciate is that using Fire & Blood keeps the story grounded in canon. HBO has spent years building the Targaryen timeline through House of the Dragon, and the film can now show the rise before the fall.

My Honest Take: What Excites Me and What Worries Me About the Aegon’s Conquest Movie 

I promised an honest opinion, so here it is, even though a formal review is years away. 

What excites me: 

• A cinema-scale dragon war. The dragons of Aegon the Conqueror finally get the big-screen treatment that IMAX viewers tasted in 2015. 

• Fresh territory. Because Aegon the Conqueror has never been shown before, the movie cannot be accused of repeating old scenes. 

• A tight story. One conquest from Fire & Blood, one film. After the sprawling later seasons, a focused narrative sounds refreshing. 

• A strong writer. Beau Willimon knows how to make political manoeuvring feel thrilling. 

• A director who knows Westeros. Owen Harris has already shot one of the most talked-about episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. 

What worries me: 

• The director’s film experience. Owen Harris has one feature of credit, and a summer tentpole is a different beast. 

• The runtime challenge. A conquest across several kingdoms is a lot to fit into two-and-a-half hours, and my Enola Holmes 3 review shows how a franchise film can feel overstuffed even at 105 minutes.
