To celebrate Raj Kapoor’s centenary, Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985) was re-released, and I watched it at PVR Palladium Phoenix Mall. The theater was packed, with the audience cheering for Mandakini’s iconic entry and songs like “Sun Saiba Sun.”
The film, a dream project of Raj Kapoor, tells the story of Ganga, a woman who follows the river from Gangotri to Calcutta, symbolizing purity while facing exploitation. Though controversial for its bold scenes, Raj Kapoor defended it as a message of innocence and purity amidst a corrupt world.
Mandakini’s portrayal of Ganga was her best, and Ravindra Jain’s music added depth to the film’s emotional impact. Ram Teri Ganga Maili was a massive hit, running for over a year in Mumbai and conveying a message that’s still relevant today: “Clean Ganga, Clean Minds.”
