In Jigra, Alia Bhatt takes on the role of Satya, a woman driven by an unyielding determination to save her younger brother, Ankur (Raina), who has been falsely imprisoned on drug charges in a foreign jail. The film sets up its premise early, with Satya comparing herself to a Bachchanesque hero, ready to fight against all odds. The movie draws inspiration from Yash Johar’s 1993 film Gumrah, centering on a prison break plot.
Satya embarks on a perilous rescue mission, assisted by Mr. Bhatia (Manoj Pahwa) and Muthu (Rahul Ravindran), who also have loved ones trapped in the same prison. The film attempts to balance emotional depth with action-packed sequences, but while it succeeds in creating moments of tension, the pacing falters, and the plot stretches thin in its second half.
Alia Bhatt’s performance is physically demanding, involving fights, stunts, and intense action scenes. However, the focus on her character comes at the expense of others, leading to a narrative that feels overly reliant on her presence, leaving supporting characters underdeveloped. Despite these shortcomings, Bhatt’s portrayal of a tough, relentless fighter is commendable, though the emotional depth she typically brings to roles is somewhat muted here.
