“Narayana Murthy Advocates 70-Hour Workweek to Fight Poverty”
Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has once again supported the idea of a 70-hour workweek for young Indians, emphasizing hard work as the key to lifting the nation out of poverty. Speaking at the Indian Chamber of Commerce event in Kolkata, Murthy stressed the need for relentless effort to make India a global leader.
He pointed out that over 800 million Indians rely on free rations, highlighting the widespread poverty in the country. Murthy said, “If we don’t work hard, who will? A Chinese worker is 3.5 times more productive than an Indian. If we keep making excuses, we’ll remain poor.”
Murthy shared his journey of moving from Nehru-era socialism to supporting entrepreneurship after seeing prosperity and efficiency in Western countries. He believes poverty can be eradicated through job creation and entrepreneurship. “The government has no role in entrepreneurship,” he said, promoting “compassionate capitalism” that combines wealth creation with social responsibility.
He encouraged Indian youth to aim for global excellence, drawing from Infosys’ philosophy of competing with the best companies worldwide. According to Murthy, “Performance leads to recognition, recognition leads to respect, and respect leads to power.”
Murthy urged individuals to take responsibility for India’s future, saying, “If we don’t realize our potential, the world will continue to overlook us.”
