Indian cinema has long been dominated by male stars, but a 16-year-old changed the game. Zaira Wasim starred in Secret Superstar (2017), a coming-of-age film that became India’s highest-grossing woman-led film. With ₹905 crore global earnings, largely thanks to its $124 million success in China, it beat films led by stars like Kangana Ranaut, Alia Bhatt, and Rani Mukerji. No other woman-led Indian film has matched its success. Zaira, who also starred in Dangal, had an extraordinary start but later quit Bollywood.
