Salman Khan is one of the biggest stars in Indian cinema, known for giving blockbuster hits. However, not all his movies have been successful. His biggest box office flop was Marigold, which was released in 2007.
Marigold was an international film directed by Willard Carroll. It starred Ali Larter as an American actress who comes to India and falls in love with a local man, played by Salman Khan. The movie was made in both Hindi and English and aimed to combine Bollywood style with American romantic comedy.
The movie was made on a budget of ₹19 crore but earned only ₹21 lakh on its opening day in India. It struggled to make just ₹1.27 crore at the Indian box office and only $250K overseas. The worldwide total was just above ₹2 crore, making it Salman Khan’s biggest box office failure.
Marigold received bad reviews for its awkward storytelling. It didn’t appeal to Indian audiences because it felt too Western, and it didn’t work internationally because it was too desi. The movie also faced tough competition from Chak De India in India and The Transformers internationally.
The movie was a turning point for everyone involved. Willard Carroll stopped directing, writing, and producing movies after Marigold. Ali Larter never acted in another Bollywood film. While she found success in Hollywood with the Resident Evil series, her career didn’t take off beyond that.
