R Madhavan On Re-releases: A Trend, Not A Game Changer

Recently, many old movies like Sanam Teri Kasam, Tumbbad, and Rockstar have been re-released in theatres and performed well at the box office. Meanwhile, new movies are struggling to attract audiences. This has led to debates about whether re-released films are affecting the success of new releases.

Actor R Madhavan, whose 2001 film Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein was re-released in August 2024 after 23 years, believes this trend is temporary. He explains, “People love nostalgia. They want to relive the experience of watching these films in theatres, especially those that were not appreciated much when they first released, like Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein and Tumbbad.”

He further adds, “These films became cult hits over time, and audiences now want to enjoy their original magic. However, re-releases won’t be a game-changer; they’re just an extra way for producers to earn money.” He also mentions that while this trend may continue for some time, it might make things difficult for new films trying to succeed in theatres.

Madhavan concludes, “Nostalgia is powerful, but it’s not a fresh investment. Sometimes, old films feel more relevant than the new ones releasing that week.”
