Karan Johar, one of Bollywood’s biggest filmmakers and the head of Dharma Productions, recently spoke about the film industry in an interview with Komal Nahta. He said that many people in Bollywood live in a ‘delusion’ that cannot be cured.
Karan admitted that he never thought he deserved success when he started his career. He said, “One day on the sets of My Name Is Khan, I thought, ‘Maybe I know my job.’ I have always believed that I have been more fortunate than talented.”
He added that he sees himself as a realist. “Delusion is a disease with no vaccination. If I had that vaccine, I would have given it to many people in the industry because they are all living in delusion.”
Karan also shared that he is mostly realistic about his work. “I am 80% realistic and 20% aspirational. Some people in this industry lie to themselves and believe they made a great film when in reality, it is not.”
Karan made his directorial debut with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998. His last film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023), was a romantic drama starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, and others.
