Kangana Ranaut shared her struggles with her first solo directorial movie, Emergency. She admitted to making several wrong choices, including directing the film herself and opting for a theatrical release instead of streaming.
In an interview with News18, Kangana said she felt scared when the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) delayed certifying the movie. She said, “Releasing it in theatres was a mistake. I could’ve gotten a better deal on OTT without facing censorship or edits.”
The CBFC is a government body that certifies films for public viewing in India.
Talking about directing, Kangana added, “I underestimated the challenges of making a film about such a sensitive topic. I thought I could get away with it, but I was wrong. Movies about Mrs. Gandhi, like Kissa Kursi Ka, faced backlash, and no one even knows about that film today.”
The film showcases Kangana as Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the Emergency and Operation Bluestar. It also features Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and others in key roles. After much delay, Emergency will release in cinemas on January 17.
