Chhaava Review: Vicky Impresses, Akshaye Stuns”

Chhaava follows the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj (Vicky Kaushal), the second ruler of the Maratha Empire, who fights against Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb (Akshaye Khanna). As Aurangzeb vows to defeat Sambhaji and expand his rule, the film builds up to their intense conflict. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the movie is based on the novel Chhaava by Shivaji Sawant.

What Works
Vicky Kaushal delivers a power-packed performance as Sambhaji, fully immersing himself in the role. His intense scenes, especially in the final hour, are gripping. Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb is equally powerful, with his expressions adding to the drama. The grand scale, set designs, and war sequences are visually impressive.

What Falls Short
The film struggles in the first half, lacking an emotional connection. The excessive action sequences and slow pacing test the audience’s patience. The supporting female characters, including Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai and Diana Penty as Zeenat, have limited screen time, leaving their impact weaker. Divya Dutta, as Soyrabai, delivers a strong performance but appears too briefly.

Final Verdict
Chhaava had the potential to be an unforgettable tribute to Sambhaji’s bravery. However, the overuse of action scenes and poor editing weaken its impact. The film shines in moments where Sambhaji is shown as a real person rather than a larger-than-life warrior.

Rating: 3.5/5
